Gaza Strip Graffiti: Artist Banksy Tunnels Back Into Palestine

Article by Urbanist

Well known for polarizing political artwork, the infamous street artist Banksy recently returned to the Middle East and filmed a short video about his new work while also commenting on the culture and conditions in a famously contentious place.

Regarding a cat mural created on this trip, he writes: “a local man came up and said ‘Please — what does this mean?’ I explained I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website — but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens.”

His snark knows few boundaries, if any, and is sure to spark global debate on multiple fronts: “Gaza is often described as ‘the world’s largest open air prison’ because no-one is allowed to enter or leave. But that seems a bit unfair to prisons — they don’t have their electricity and drinking water cut off randomly almost every day.”

The title of the video below, “Make this the year YOU discover a new destination,” framed as a sort of satirical low-budget travel ad, speaks volumes about his opinions and intentions in revisiting Palestine, where he has worked previously and along similar lines (mainly on dividing walls in the West Bank).

Crossing into Gaza from the north generally requires Israeli permission, hence the tunnels as an alternative- there is no functioning airport, sea vessels are turned away by the blockade and land access is limited though possible through Egypt in the south. Some argue Banksy’s work is one-sided with regards to Israel and Palestine, ignoring the role of Hamas in the ongoing conflict that has rendered so much of Palestine into rubble, and this new series is sure to spark some serious conversations, arguments and debates.

Who is He? About Banksy: Famously Anonymous Street Artist

Article by Delana

banksy urban guerrilla art

The life of the street artist is, by necessity, one of anonymity. In many of the world’s cities, the most noticeable and breathtaking pieces of art aren’t created by world-renowned talents. They are created by the unknown street artist under cover of darkness. We never see them and they are known only by their tagging pseudonyms. This is part one of our complete eight-part guide to  Banksy Art and Graffiti..

UK-based street artist Banksy is a notable half-exception to this rule. His work is currently seen around the planet. There are few in the art world (street or otherwise) who don’t know his signature style. The exception, though, is that no one is sure just who he is. There have been many claims to know his true identity but none have ever been definitive to date.

banksy street art what are you looking at

Who is Banksy? We may not know his real name, but his art is unmistakably the work of a passionate individual. So what do we know about Banksy? His paintings, stencils, and other art pieces frequently address serious social issues. He takes on capitalism, war, poverty, and governments with grace. His work often displays a keen sense of humor, making it equally possible that you will laugh or cast your eyes down thoughtfully upon seeing a Banksy piece.

And although the pseudonym and the signature style of the artist are well known, there’s not much else that we know for sure about Banksy. A few tidbits of information are widely accepted: he is from Bristol, UK, and got involved in graffiti art sometime in the early 90s. He began to gain widespread notoriety around 2003. He was born in or around 1974 and sports a silver tooth. He is, according to the few people who have met him as Banksy, an unassuming and typical-looking man.

His refusal to be interviewed in person or even to reveal his real name has added to his mystique over the years. In the UK (and, increasingly, in other parts of the world) Banksy-spotters claim to know the artist’s real identity on a fairly regular basis. Although he’s been caught on CCTV a few times, he is clever enough to keep his identity a mystery.

There is good reason for leaving us guessing about Banksy. Banksy’s work has been equated with vandalism on several occasions, and many have called for his prosecution. His choice of subject matter coupled with his medium (typically spray paint on public walls) ruffles feathers no matter where he is (or who he is).

Banksy’s talents aren’t limited to paint and the occasional pencil drawing. He has been responsible for a number of social commentaries involving replacing hundreds of Paris Hilton CDs with CDs of his own creation. He has sneaked his own work into several art museums, including a prehistoric-looking piece at the British Museum which the museum decided to add to their own permanent collection.

Just as controversial as his methods is Banksy’s take on the art world at large. He has been known to deride other artists for their self-importance and “inferior” art forms. He has even taken on the people who buy his art. Following a 2006 Sotheby’s auction of several of his works, he produced an illustration of an auction on his official website featuring the words “I can’t believe you morons actually buy this s***.” He is a vocal opponent of the organized art world, though he now produces some work that is more conventional than his street art roots.

Banksy’s work is applauded by many, but some critics say that it oversimplifies issues to appeal to the masses. Other critics – most notably, representatives from Keep Britain Tidy – believe that Banksy’s street art is a crime and that he is setting a negative example for other would-be graffiti artists.

Through his talent and his dedication to art and his personal statements, Banksy has become perhaps the most famous anonymous artist ever. We still don’t know his true identity or where he will pop up next, but just mentioning his pseudonym brings a look of recognition to the faces of anyone who knows anything about art.

Banksy Arrested In London, Identity Revealed

London Police Chief Wayne Leppard speaking to reporters about the arrest of Banksy.

London, England — The England-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter that for years has gone by the pseudonymous name of Banksy, was arrested early this morning by police in London. After hours of questioning and a raid of his London art studio, his true name and identity have finally been revealed.

The City of London Police say Banksy’s real name is Paul William Horner, a 39-year old male born in Bristol, England. The BBC has also confirmed this information with his PR agent Jo Brooks and the website that acts as a handling service on behalf of the artist, Pest Control.

London Police Chief Wayne Leppard held a press conference to answer questions about how Banksy was finally apprehended. “We had a 24-hour Anti-Graffiti Task Force monitoring different groups known to have associated with Banksy. We received word that around 2am a group of individuals left a flat speculated to be one of Banky’s art studios...

Banksy not arrested: Internet duped by fake report claiming artist's identity revealed
http://www.independent.co.uk/
ELLA ALEXANDER    Monday 20 October 2014

Banksy has not been arrested, despite a report stating the contrary.

“The Banksy arrest is a hoax,” the street artist’s publicist, Jo Brooks, told The Independent.

However, the prank seems to have duped the internet, with his name quickly trending on Twitter.

A false story, published on US website National Report, alleged that the identity of the British street artist had finally been revealed and he had been arrested by London’s Metropolitan Police and is being held “without bail on charges of vandalism, conspiracy, racketeering and counterfeiting”.

The story claimed that Banksy’s London art studio had been raided, where “thousands of dollars of counterfeit money along with future projects of vandalism” were found, along with ID thought to belong to the famed anonymous street artist, which allegedly identified him as Liverpool-born Paul Homer.

Hoax 'Banksy Arrested in London' Story Dupes the Internet Again
By Ewan Palmer
October 20, 2014 12:43 BST

Another hoax story is lobbed into the myths concerning graffiti artist Banksy(Getty Images)

A hoax story alleging the British graffiti artist Banksy has been arrested and has had his identity revealed has once again duped thousands of people online.

According to the highly refutable website National Report, a 'news' website consisting entirely of fake stories, the artist was arrested by Metropolitan Police at his studio and his identity revealed as 35-year-old Paul Horner, originally from Liverpool.

The article contains all the elements you would expect to see from a news story covering an arrest, including details from police and quotes from those close to Banksy.

However, it only takes the bare minimum of fact-checking and research to spot that this story is a hoax.

The article claims the story has been confirmed by the BBC (it hasn't) and that City of London Police Chief Lyndon Edwards held a press conference to answer questions about Banksy's arrest (he never did and Edwards doesn't even exist).

US news site CNN also did not conduct an interview with Banksy's "project manager" John Hawes following his arrest (also because he doesn't exist). -- http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/

The Report Of Graffiti Artist Banksy's Arrest Is Definitely A Hoax

JULIE ZEVELOFF
FEB. 22, 2013

There's a press release making the rounds on the internet this afternoon saying that London police have arrested famed graffiti artist Banksy and revealed his identity.

Don't believe it — the whole thing seems to be a hoax.

We just placed a call to London's Metropolitan Police, who confirmed that the Banksy is still safely under cover.

And there are no reports about the alleged arrest on BBC or CNN, which both supposedly covered the story according to the press release on PRLog.

Tellingly, the contact address for the release is an email address at the domain name www.iywib.com, a humor site (it's currently down).

We have to give the writer some credit, though — the details in the press release are pretty specific. It claims that Banksy is Paul William Horner, a 39-year old male born in Bristol, England.

And it says that he's "currently being held without bail on charges of vandalism, conspiracy, racketeering and counterfeiting."

While the press release seems confined to Twitter for the moment, a few publications seem to have fallen for the hoax.

Complex wrote earlier this afternoon:

While the rumor swirls around often, this time it may be true. Banksy was supposedly arrested yesterday in London under charges of vandalism and counterfeiting. He has been revealed as Paul Horner, a 39-year-old male born in Bristol, England.

He is said to be currently held without bail. We will report more details as they are revealed.

Jezebel also seem to have taken the bait, though they swiftly added a caveat acknowledging it may be a hoax.

I am definitely not Banksy: Man sues over false arrest

Is the mysterious British graffiti artist known as Banksy a 33-year-old Brooklyn freelance engineer?

No, but cops arrested Richard Pfeiffer anyway, last summer, accusing him of drawing a smiley face on an East Village coffee shop wall, when he was merely admiring the work, which he claims was put there by the famous “street artist,” according to his new lawsuit.

Pfeiffer filed suit ion Manhattan Supreme Court against the city and six police officers citing false arrest after he was nabbed outside the Third Rail Coffee shop at 159 2nd Ave. near 10th Street on July 12.

Pfeiffer’s attorney, Ilissa Brownstein, said her client was merely admiring the artwork with his fiance when police pounced.

Cops thought they’d found their culprit because Pfeiffer was carrying a marker, but the engineer showed police that the image wasn’t fresh because it didn’t smudge, Brownstein said.

He also explained that the tip of his marker didn’t match the wall drawing.
But the officers weren’t buying Pfeiffer’s story and he was locked up for 24 hours before a judge released him, according to the suit.

The case against Pfeiffer, who had no criminal record, was tossed in October, the filing says.

Pfeiffer says he lost seven days of work at $45 an hour and has to take Ambien and Trazodone to sleep. He’s suing for unspecified damages.
A spokesman for the city said, “the lawsuit will be reviewed.”

The real Banksy, who’s never revealed his true name, peppered New York City with “exhibits” at unannounced locations every day throughout a 31-day self-styled “residency” in the fall of 2013.

He also sold his work for $60 a pop to unsuspecting tourists in Central Park. Auction houses later said the pieces would sell for up to $160,000 each.
