Marilao River, one of the dirtiest in the world.
Unlike other bodies of water, the Marilao River will be peaceful this summer. As one of the 30 dirtiest rivers in the world, no one would dare swim on its waters, not even fearless and adventurous broadcast journalist Abner Mercado.
Mercado, however, will dive into the sorry state of the Marilao River this Tuesday, March 24 on “The Correspondents,†as he investigates the condition of the Philippine rivers and the efforts being put in by the Filipino people and government to take care of them.
Like the Marilao River, Pasig River has gained the distinction as one of the dying rivers in the country. Factories and communities have lined up along its shores, turning the river into a waste bin. However, there is still hope.
[ABS-CBN recently launched “Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig,†a clean-up campaign to save the historical body of water in seven years. The group hopes to unite people to make Pasig River a tourist spot like Bohol’s Loboc River, which still has a thriving ecosystem. The Boholanos take pride of having the discipline not to throw anything into the river which could lead to its deterioration. [/color]
Mercado will find out if there is still hope for other endangered river systems in the country.
Join Abner Mercado as he talks about the murky future of Philippine rivers this Tuesday, March 24 on “The Correspondents,†after “Bandila†on ABS-CBN. Visit thecorrespondents.multiply.com for more information on the anchors and documentaries of “The Correspondents
