The Greek artist Timanthes began his studies under a respected tutor. After several years of training, Timanthes produced an exquisite work of art. Unfortunately, he became so enraptured with the painting that he spent countless hours merely gazing upon it.
One morning when he arrived to admire his work, the young artist was shocked to find it defiled with paint. Timanthes, understandably enraged, ran to his teacher, who admitted that he had indeed destroyed the painting. "I did it for your own good," he explained. "That painting was retarding your progress. Start again and see if you can do better."
Timanthes took his teacher's advice and immediately set to work. The result, The Sacrifice of Iphigenia, is regarded as one of the finest paintings of antiquity.
