The Word
« on: December 26, 2008, 01:13:38 AM »
The Society of the Divine Word was founded by Saint Arnold Janssen on September 8, 1875 in Steyl, a small village in The Netherlands, just across the German border. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Saint Arnold Janssen also answered the need of the Church in his time by founding two other religious congregations for women; the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (active) and the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit for Perpetual Adoration
The SVDs, in their 16th General Chapter, re-elected Antonio M. Pernia (Bol-anon), a Filipino, as the superior general for the next six years.

A Catholic Fil Community from Duesseldorf made a trip in Steyl. The home province of the Divine Word Missionary. I will share some pictures with you.

This is the spot that marks the traditional exact place of birth of Jesus Christ.

"Fitted into the paving, shines a 14 pointed silver star marking the exact spot surrounded by the Latin inscription: HICDE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS EST. 1717. (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary). Of the 15 lamps burning around the recess, six belong to the Greeks, 5 to the Armenians and four to the Latins." [Description from atlastours.net]

Bethlehem, birth place of Jesus

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision
but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.

Today´s  gospel ( evening mass)

Saint Peter's Square - The Pope Benedict XVI before the Urbi et Orbi Blessing
by *Checco*.

Urbi et Orbi, literally "to the City [of Rome] and to the World," was a standard opening of Roman proclamations. Nowadays the term is used to denote a papal address and Apostolic Blessing that is addressed to the City of Rome and to the entire world.

The blessing takes place at each Easter and Christmas celebration in Rome from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. Part of the urbi et orbi blessing is the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin through a plenary indulgence attached to the Papal blessing.

The main phrase of the blessing ends Et benedictio Dei omnipotentis, Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti descendat super vos et maneat semper (And may the blessing of Almighty God, + the Father, + the Son, and + the Holy Spirit, descend on you and remain with you always).

St. John's Wine

Drinking blessed wine for the love of St. John is an old Catholic devotion.

Directions

In some churches, after the convent or parochial Mass, wine is blessed in honor of St. John (see the Roman Ritual, English translation The Book of Blessings, Blessing of Food or Drink or Other Elements Connected with Devotion). If the custom is not held in your church, the pastor would probably be happy to bless a bottle for you.

The wine is served in the home before the main meal. The father lifts the cup toward the mother and says: "I drink you the love of St. John." And she answers, "I thank you for the love of St. John."

Then the mother turns to the eldest child and says, "I drink you the love of St. John." The ceremony continues from one to another including any guests and servants. This practice takes its origin from the fact that St. John was the apostle of love, and in the legend that at one time poisoned wine did not affect him.
............................................................

We drank wine after the mass, I experienced this for the first time.

Spaetburgundy was the wine, and the priest said "Drink to the love of St John!".

The Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in the Roman Catholic Church in honour of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his foster father, Saint Joseph, as a family.

The feast of the Holy Family was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 and until January 1969 was celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of the Epiphany; that is to say, on whichever day from January 7 through January 13, all inclusive, fell on a Sunday (see General Roman Calendar of 1962).

It is now observed on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day, in the Octave of Christmas; in years when no such Sunday exists, because both December 25 and the ensuing January 1 are Sundays, it is held on December 30, a Friday in such years.

The feast is not a holy day of obligation, but the obligation to attend Mass holds for the Sunday on which it most frequently falls, as happens for other feasts and solemnities that happen to be celebrated on a Sunday.

When the Feast of the Holy Family was moved to its present date, its previous place in the calendar was taken by the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Most Protestant denominations refer to the Sunday that Roman Catholics call the Feast of the Holy Family simply as the First Sunday after Christmas.

Prayer
GOD our Heavenly Father, You call all peoples to be united as one family in worshipping You as the one and true God. You willed that Your Son become man, giving Him a virgin mother and a foster father to form the Holy Family of Nazareth.

WE pray: may the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, image and model of every human family unit walk in the spirit of Nazareth and grow in the understanding of its particular mission in society and the Church. May our families be living cells of love, faithfulness and unity, thus reflecting God's covenant with humanity and Christ's redeeming love for His Church.

JESUS, Mary and Joseph protect our families from all evil; keep us, who are away from home, one in love with our dear ones.

January 1 is World Day of Peace

The theme of Pope Benedict XVI’s 2009 World Day of Peace message is “Fighting Poverty to Build Peace.” In the message, the Holy Father reminds the faithful that our efforts to address poverty reflect our commitment to the dignity of the human person and to building a more just and peaceful world. The full text of the Holy Father's message along with a bulletin insert and bulletin quotes can be found at http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/international/worlddayofpeacewebsite.shtml.

The Blessed Virgin was eternally predestined, in conjunction with the incarnation of the divine Word, to be the Mother of God. By decree of divine Providence, she served on earth as the loving mother of the divine Redeemer, an associate of unique nobility, and the Lord’s humble handmaid. She conceived, brought forth, and nourished Christ” (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, 61).
Today January 1, 2009 is dedicated to her, Mary concieve without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,
and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this,
they made known the message
that had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed
by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
just as it had been told to them.

When eight days were completed for his circumcision,
he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel
before he was conceived in the womb.

The Relics of the 3 Holy Magis are housed here!

Cologne Cathedral stands on the site of a 4th century Roman temple, followed by a square church known as the "oldest cathedral" commissioned by Maternus, the first Christian bishop of Cologne. A second church built on the site, the "Old Cathedral," was completed in 818. This burned down on April 30, 1248.

Construction of the present Gothic church began in the 13th century and took, with interruptions, more than 600 years to complete. The new structure was built to house the relics of the Three Magi, taken from Milan by Holy Roman Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa and given to the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald von Dassel in 1164.

Welcome to the International Year of Astronomy
Credit: IYA2009, IAU, UNESCO
Explanation: Astronomers all over planet Earth invite you to experience the night sky as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009. This year was picked by the International Astronomical Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization because it occurs 400 years after Galileo turned one of the first telescopes toward the heavens. Peering through that small window, Galileo discovered that the Moon has craters, Venus has phases, Jupiter has moons, and Saturn has rings. This year you can discover these and many modern wonders of the amazing overhead tapestry that is shared by all of humanity. If, like many others, you find the night sky wondrous and educational, be sure to attend an IYA2009 event in your area, and tell any schools and children that might be interested. Also, please feel free to explore the extensive IYA2009 web pages to find international media events that include blogs, webcasts and much much more.
