On October 13, 1972 the team was on its way from Montevideo, Uruguay to play a match in Santiago Chile. Fierce wind and snow hounded the flight as the plane trekked through the Andes mountains. Due to poor weather and pilot error the plane crashed atop of an unnamed mountain on the border of Chile and Argentina.

Search parties from three countries searched for 11 days in vain to find the downed flight of 45 people but were unsuccessful and all passengers were presumed dead. What followed next is one of the greatest examples of human survival ever recorded. Despite no food or heat 16 members of the team stayed on top of the mountain for over two months through the brutal winter while being forced to eat the remains of their fallen teammates before finally being rescued.

it will take me a lifetime to make a clear stand, if at all, on this moral dilemma.  yes, they had to survive and the dead among them were able to help the survivors in the most macabre way.  that is understood.  but what if the dead were our family?

If I remember the story right, the survivors agreed not to eat members of the family. There was, I think, a brother and his sister who died in his arms sometime in the early part of the ordeal.

Though the hotel was a bit small, and the triple room very cramped, it seemed clean enough superficially (except perhaps the towels, which smelled awful), but then I was to discover that there was more to the hotel under the surface. On the night of Saturday 10th September, I went to bed in a perfect state of health and nothing to report in terms of dermatological problems.

When I woke up on the morning of Sunday 11th September, my body was absolutely covered with bites that appear to be consistent with bedbug or flea bites (as my dermatologist has also told me). This is most probably the source of the bites, because I was clothed with pajamas and the windows were closed entirely due to the cold (thereby excluding mosquitoes, which could not get into the covers of a bed and through the pajamas anyway).

dihay film ni-ani, it was a good discussion topic in religion during my college days. The survivors who had eated human flesh were given the absolution. One of the them is now a practicing doctor. This was repeated by the boat people who fled Vietnam, days stranded middle of the sea sorrounded with dead people who where eaten to survive. There was a documentary film on this from the vietnamese refugees.
