One is reminded of Solomon, whom God gave a wise and an understanding heart, and riches, and wealth, and honor--and 700 wives and 300 concubines.

Indeed. Solomon the Wise, Solomon the Magnificent. But you see, the reasons why God gave him all the riches is because when God asked Solomon what he wanted and wished for, Solomon asked to know more of God, to be closer to God and to know "His Ways".
Because Solomon did not ask for riches, for wealth, for honor, God rewarded with him a bountiful life. The riches of the world ; the flood gates of Heaven poured on him, Solomon, all that one could ask for in life.
And so it is so that no king in Judea would be as great and wise as Solomon. Before and After.
It is a lesson. Ask for God's knowledge and wisdom, and all the riches of the world will come after.
Matthew 6:33, "Seek ye the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you..."
