Hero dog 'Kabang' is finally coming home
« on: June 05, 2013, 01:41:23 PM »
By Kim Arveen Patria | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom – 22 hours ago

The open area just above her mouth is her new nasal cavity.

Hero dog “Kabang” has been released from the veterinary medical teaching hospital at the University of California (UC) Davis, the school said in its website Tuesday. Although experts failed to reconstruct her face, the dog is now safe from further infections.

Kabang made headlines when she jumped in front of two girls about to be hit by a motorcycle in Zamboanga. The accident left a gaping wound on her face.

She was brought to the hospital to UC Davis in October 2012 by veterinarian Anton Lim for a planned surgery to reconstruct her snout and upper jaw.

The trip and other costs were paid for by donations in a movement called “Care for Kabang,” which attracted sponsors from the Philippines and abroad.

Doctors had to treat Kabang for other illnesses before performing surgery, however, after discovering that she also had heartworm disease and an infectious cancer.

“We were able to treat all of the complications that arose with the best specialists available,” said Professor Frank Verstraete, an expert in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery, who led the team which treated Kabang.

Procedures included the removal of the dog’s two upper teeth, the reconstruction of an eyelid damaged during the accident and correction of the dog’s facial injury.

“Because it was not possible to reconstruct Kabang’s snout and a functional upper jaw, the energetic young dog will never look like she did before her accident,” UC Davis said.

“However, because the facial wound has been closed, she will be better protected against infection and prepared for an active life when she returns to her family in the Philippines,” it added.

Veterinarian Lim has earlier noted, however, that Kabang may no longer return to her original master whose daughter and niece he served.

Rodolfo Bunggal has surrendered ownership to Lim prior to the dog’s trip to the U.S., noting that the veterinarian is in a better position to take care of Kabang.

Bunggal nonetheless sent a thank you note via Care for Kabang to doctors, donors and others who helped his dog recover.

“Ako po si Rudy Bunggal na nagpapasalamat nang taos puso kay Ma’am Karen (Kenggot), Sir Rob (Warren) at sa mga staff ng UC Davis doctors na gumamot kay Kabang,” the handwritten note read.

Kenggot was the founder of Care for Kabang, while Warren is communications and marketing director at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

“Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat at sa mga donors na tumulong sa pagdonate para mapagamot si Kabang,” he added.

Philippine hero dog returns home from US

The Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines --

The Philippine dog that lost half her face saving the lives of two girls returned home Saturday after treatment in the United States.

Filipino veterinarian Anton Lim who accompanied the dog - named Kabang - said the mixed-breed whose snout and upper jaw had been sheared off was treated at the University of California, Davis, veterinary hospital for seven months with $27,000 in donations raised in the Philippines and abroad.

Kabang suffered the injuries in December 2011 when she jumped into the path of a motorcycle, stopping it from running over her owner's daughter and niece in southern Zamboanga city.

UC Davis veterinary Professor Frank Verstraete said doctors at the hospital performed surgery to heal her wounds, though they could not reconstruct Kabang's jaw or snout.

Doctors had to first treat her for other ailments, including a tumor and heartworm, to ensure her wounds would heal. They took skin from her cheeks, neck, and forehead to cover up sensitive areas that were exposed on her face during surgery in March, Verstraete said.

Kabang won widespread sympathy because of her injuries from what has been described as a heroic act. A nurse from Buffalo, New York, spearheaded a fund-raising campaign to bring Kabang to the United States because Philippine veterinaries could not treat her.

Lim said donations poured in from 45 countries. "It is very fulfilling that at least our hope in humanity is restored," he said.

Lim said Kabang has become a symbol of "unconditional love."

"Now, if you give unconditional love to your dog, of course they will give it back to you. So, she saved two lives so the whole world actually came together to save hers, so it is really a very nice symbol for everyone," he said.

Lim said a parade is planned for Kabang's Sunday homecoming in Zamboanga.

Dr. Anton Lim is interviewed by the media as he holds Kabang, a two-year-old injured mixed breed, upon arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay city, south of Manila, Philippines, early Saturday June 8, 2013 from San Francisco, Calif.

Snout-less lifesaving dog gets hero's welcome

MICHAELA CABRERA
09/06/2013

A shepherd-mix dog who lost her snout saving two girls has returned to her owner’s home in the southern Philippines after eight months of veterinary treatment in the United States, earning a new title as "dog ambassador of goodwill".

Last year, Kabang jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle to save two young girls in Zamboanga.

On Saturday, two-year-old Kabang, her tail wagging, faced television cameras and fans at Manila International airport and toured a nearby upscale shopping mall and park frequented by dog lovers.

She was an instant star.

Authorities are planning a short motorcade on Monday in  honour of Kebang, which means "different colours" in local dialect, in the southern town of Zamboanga.

"What we want is to make her an ambassador of dog good will, and to promote responsible pet ownership," said Anton Lim, a veterinarian who accompanied Kabang to the University of California in Davis for surgery.

US doctors closed her facial wound but could no longer save and reconstruct her nose. Kabang also survived a cancerous tumour and heartworm.

"What we see here — she saved two lives, so the whole world actually came together to save her."

People from around the world donated lunch money to raise NZ$34,000 for her medical treatment abroad.
