Bai Chris,
I took classes on Arabic Language when I was in undergraduate college and the instructor of Arabic Language was from Syria. He came from a village with a strong Christian minority. I befriended my instructor, Suleiman (the Arabic form of SOLOMON). The village that he came was a coptic catholic rite and had been a community of believers since the 4th/5th century AD. He told me that it was very regular for people in the town to be taxed almost twice the amount as the muslims that lived in surrounding towns. It was the government's way of trying to "forcibly convert" the Christian community in Syria.
My instructor had a friend during college who , because of my instructor, became more interested in the Teachings of Jesus Christ and so , asked my instructor to teach him about Jesus Christ. The father of the friend found out that his son had converted to Christianity and had his son killed. This was a devastating blow to my instructor, who had become good friends with Sharif (the one who was killed for converting to Christianity).
Christians from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon , Egypt etc are forced to live in dhimmitude in these lands, many of them are leaving the Middle East for more "tolerant" countries. There is a surge of Christian Arabs in the United States because of this situation. There is an exodus of Christian Arabs out of the Middle East because of the kinds of conditions they are placed in their own native lands.
My former instructor Suleiman , who is a good friend of mine to this day, lives in the United States.
