Personal Blog.
On 26th and 27th of November 2009, I will take my board exams at Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. I am Macky Ferniz, age: 44, graduated BS Civil Engineering, October 1987 from the University of Bohol, 22 years from now.
To those who do not know, this explains my long silence at Tubag Bohol.
After graduation and being un-licensed, I worked as assistant to the resident Engineer at an Asian Development Bank funded project to renovate all buildings and infrastructures of Bilar Agricultural College (BAC). After two years the project was completed.
For the record, all structures survived without-a-scratch from the earthquake of 1989 at magnitude 5.7.
After the project, I became a “misfit of profession†doing sales, delivery, marketing, advertising & even laborer in various establishments of Tagbilaran City. In 1991, I went to Saudi Arabia as an OFW. This is with the help of my relatives who were already established in Saudi Arabia. That time was the height of Gulf War when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and then liberated by the US led coalition. We witnessed Scud Missiles vs. Patriot Missiles colliding in mid-air with huge explosions that rocked our villas almost every night.
Here in Saudi Arabia I spent almost quarter of a century, working in marketing & distribution company and continued being a “misfit of professionâ€. Since mathematics is more advanced in engineering than in any field of education, I was assigned in all math related jobs such as forecasting, estimating, costing, P&L, statistics…etc and now I managed the International Purchasing Department (import/export).
In September this year, I heard that Board Exams will be conducted in our locality under SPLBE program of PRC. Since then I was enticed of this great challenge to take the exams in foreign land after 22 years. With a very limited time, I started recalling engineering subjects such as concrete/steel design, strength of materials, hydraulics/design of dams/spillways, mechanics (physics), math/analytic geometry, calculus (differential & integral)…etc. After 22 years, engineering is now out of my mind (just a dot in my gray matter) except for mathematics. Somehow, it is true that long-term memory is mysterious to the extent that I am able to visualize my UB instructors writing the formulas at the black board.
Having limited capability Vs. huge challenge, I considered this endeavor as an adventure, expedition & a quest.
However, besides my family, from your friendship I draw the confidence, strength, hope, inspiration and I have nothing, but only this.
Herewith my sincere thanks to your prayers and best wishes for my success.
Macky Ferniz
Good news: After the exams, I can rock n roll at Tubag Bohol.
