John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

According to reports, a Kuwaiti royal prince has become a follower of Jesus Christ. In an audio file posted with his name, he affirms that if he is killed because of a recording he made where he talks about his conversion, he firmly believes that he will meet Jesus Christ face-to-face. The news comes from Middle Eastern sources which state that al-Haqiqa – a Christian satellite TV channel in Arabic that transmits Christian religious programmes – broadcast an audio file attributed to the Kuwaiti prince, identified as Abdullah al-Sabah. The al-Sabahs are the royal family of Kuwait, a country rich in oil. The name Abdullah (servant of God) frequently appears in the Emir’s family tree.

In his audio file, Abdullah declared: “First of all, I fully agree with the distribution of this audio file and I now declare that if they kill me because of it, then I will appear before Jesus Christ and be with him for all eternity.” In this statement, the prince demonstrates his awareness of the fate in store for a martyr of the faith, according to Christian doctrine. The television channel stated that Abdullah is a member of the royal family, and that he recently renounced his faith in Islam and became a Christian, without specifying which particular branch of Christianity he had chosen. After stating his full name, the prince declared: “I will accept whatever they do to me, because the truth in the Bible has guided me towards the right path.”

In the audio file, Abdullah talks about the Islamic groups that are winning the elections in Egypt and declares: “Islamic communities have always wanted to attack in different parts of the world but God has preserved the world and still protects it. This is why we have recently seen disagreements appearing among Islamic groups who are now fighting with each other. They are about to divide further into different groups.”

this news came out in january 13-18, 2012 in different outlets.  mystery still seems to shroud it, from the truth about the conversion to whether this prince is real or not.

here's an excerpt of a follow-up of that january news item on the reported conversion, as printed in the christian post dated 24 january 2012.  (Did a Kuwaiti Prince Convert to Christianity? by Michael Gryboski, http://www.christianpost.com/):

From the onset of its release, the Kuwaiti government stated that the audio recording was a fraud and denied that there was a prince by the name of "Abdullah Al-Sabah" in the Kuwaiti royal family.

In an article written by Marco Tosatti of the Vatican Insider, the name "Abdullah" does in fact appear in the family tree of the ruling family of Kuwait but not among living family members.

"In actual fact, the name Abdullah does not appear on the list of the 15 members of the royal family who rule this small, extremely wealthy country in different capacities," writes Tosatti.

"That isn't to say that this high-profile convert is not hidden somewhere within the extended family, under a different name."

One online source claimed that the "Abdullah Al-Sabah" on the audio file was Shaikh Faisal Al Abdullah Al Sabah, a Kuwaiti prince who in October 2010 was found guilty of murdering his nephew and was sentenced to death.

Once again, however, no independent confirmation has been given that the voice on the audio file and the convicted prince are one and the same.

As speculation over the validity of the audio file continues, the Kuwait News Agency reports that Mohammad Al-Nomas, minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, released a press statement encouraging peace and cooperation among the nation's Islamic majority and its Christian minority.

According to the Canadian-based organization The Voice of the Martyrs, Kuwait is more religiously tolerant than other Persian Gulf States.

"Religious tolerance in Kuwait is significantly higher than in most of the region. Immigrant religious minorities are permitted some worship facilities," reads VOM's website.

"However, proselytizing Muslims is forbidden, and Shariah (Islamic law) influences much of the legal system. Teaching Christianity is prohibited, even to legally recognized Christians."

a certain forum called 'nairaland forum' has the thread "Kuwaiti Prince Abdullah al-Sabah Converted To Christianity - Islam for Muslims".  it's 6 pages of different ideas and faiths with posts that spanned almost two months.  it's an interesting thread as it shows how immovable people can be when it comes to religion.  more interesting is that tbland's quarrels are mere playground quarrels compared to theirs.

for those who may find the time, this is the link: http://www.nairaland.com/851635/kuwaiti-prince-abdullah-al-sabah-converted/6

i doubt.  a prince is not necessarily a future king, especially in some middle east countries where a king's brothers and nephews are all princes.  (some royal titles in some countries are either sheiks or emirs.)  my take on this news item is that, unless proven otherwise, it's too good to be true.

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. Titus 3:9
