Philantrophist Irene K. Yusingco joined the ranks of other great Filipino humanitarians in the country after being bestowed the 2009 Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award.
The award, named after Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa, who embodied selfless humanitarian work throughout her entire life, was created to give honor to the men and women who emulate the ideals of the late humanitarian — also known before her death as “The Living Saint†— in the service of the poor.
The annual tribute is given by the AY Foundation of the Yuchengco Group of Companies, and the Junior Chamber International Manila (Jaycees).
“The lives of those who devote themselves to serving and uplifting the lives of the poorest of the poor in our society are incredibly inspiring. To sustain such selfless act of charity requires an extraordinary soul indeed,†AY Foundation Inc. Chairman Alfonso T. Yuchengco said in his message. “In our 22nd year of giving the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award, we will once again commend another soul who has chosen the arduous yet consecrated path of lifelong charity. It is heartwarming to know that Blessed Teresa lives on in the lives of these people.â€
Mark Steven S. Ong, president of the Manila Jaycees, said that the award also embodies the creed of their group that ‘Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life.’
“Nowhere is that better demonstrated than through the work of individuals to whom we bestow this award,†he said.
Yusingco was chosen to receive the honor this year for her work in addressing the needs of the less fortunate, which started with the caring of her six younger siblings when their mother died during the first World War. Since then, she has opened her heart and her home in Cebu City to the homeless, to the abused and to the less fortunate.
In 1977, Yusingco led the Sacred Heart Parish Ladies Association in spreading its reach to include outreach programs. Among the major programs initiated by the group was the establishment of the Francis Lim Charity Clinic to serve underprivileged parishioners and their families as well as provide regular feedings for undernourished children.
