Condemnation and Conviction: What's the Difference

Have you sinned or fell short from the glory of God and felt:

    - Small
    - Unworthy
    - Ashamed
    - Worthless
    - Belittled
    - Insufficient
    - Incapable of pleasing God
    - Non deserving of God’s presents or purpose for your life because of your down falls

Do your short comings replay over and over in your head? What you’re feeling is known as condemnation and I assure you many others have felt this too.

Condemnation

Condemnation is a tool used by the enemy to blame, citizen and belittle you. Condemnation emphasizes on the sins you’ve done and seeks to make you feel as though you’re a failure to God. In John 10:10, the Bible states that the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. What better way to go about doing this than to condemn people of their short comings and convince them to be failures? If the enemy can condemn people and make them believe their failures, they may withdraw from God and slip back into a world of sin. Although this is the objective of the enemy; I have good news, there’s no condemnation to those who are in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:1). John 3:17 states “God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” God is not a condemning God nor is He a God who condemns you of your shortcomings.

Conviction

John 16:8-11 states the Holy Spirit will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

    - Of sin, because they believe not on me;
    - Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
    - Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Let’s break this down. The Holy Spirit does not convict believers of their sins. The Holy Spirit does however convict non believers of their sins because they do not believe in Jesus Christ. Although the Holy Spirit does not convict believers of their sins, it does however convict believers of righteousness.

The Holy Spirit has an assignment and part of that assignment is to guide the believer and bring glory to the Lord by revealing things to them. The Holy Spirit is the believer’s comforter and counselor and it’s to remind you of all the things God teaches us in His word. As humans, we at times stray away or fall short of the glory of God. God knows this which is why He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within you. As the Holy Spirit leads you and guides you onto a path as righteousness, when you fall short or stray away from that path, you are convicted. The conviction happens to help you back onto the path of righteousness (right standing before the Lord). It does not happen to criticize and accuse you of your sins. Revelations 12:10 tells us that the enemy is the accuser as he goes before the Lord and accuses day and night.

What’s next?

As you walk with Christ, know that the enemy will accuses you day and night, but Jesus is interceding on your behalf. Whenever you fall short of the glory of God, repent –ask God for forgiveness, receive it in Jesus Name and know that God has forgiven you. God tells us in His word that He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, to cleanse us from all unrighteousness and remember our sins no more. Confess, repent and receive your forgiveness in Jesus Name. After you asked the Lord for his forgiveness, don’t continue to dwell on your mistakes. If God remembers your sins no more after you repent, why should you?

When the enemy comes and condemns you, the best weapon you have to defeat him is the Word of God. I like to use Romans 8:1, however there are many others to use such as Romans 8:34, which reads: “who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” God knows that we come short and sin; however, when you repent and ask for forgiveness, your sins are no longer attached to you. Remember, wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty and freedom.
