'The Great Coffee Scandal'
« on: July 27, 2007, 08:36:15 AM »
I'm sitting here this morning drinking my Starbucks French Roast and thinking about what seems so remarkable and complicated about how coffee came to be. I can just see some South American farmer sitting next to a coffea plant one day and suddenly seeing visions of shelling its red berries to get to the little bean inside. And once he saw that little bean, he would immediately know to dry it, roast it, grind it up, and pour hot water over it through a filter in order to get one of the most popular beverages in the world. I'm sure that's how it happened!

Don't you ever wonder about stuff like this or am I the only one? And doesn't it make you wonder how many other drinks or potions are still out there undiscovered? Why did we find the ones we found? Were we wired a certain way? Is it just random that we landed on coffee? Could it just as easily have gone another way and suddenly we are all drinking hot baba from the babao plant? (Don't go looking; I just made those up.)

All this tells me that we are not alone in not being an accident. That little bean inside the coffea berry is no accident either. God has built all sorts of beneficial secrets into his creation and then left us to discover them and use them. And this comes with responsibility as well because some of these secrets are harmful. That's all a part of the good and evil around us that makes life such a challenge.

All of this makes me stop dead in my tracks and go, “God, you are so awesome! To have plants, animals, natural resources, and an environment in which they can all thrive together is one thing. The brains to make something out of all these resources, and the potential to use what we make for good or for evil are even more incredible gifts you have given your creatures. Who could have thought up a God like you? Certainly none of us.”

So enjoying my coffee today has turned into an unplanned act of worship. It's amazing how you can access thoughts of God through the simplest channels. It's really not that hard once you start thinking down this road. That we can go about our work and never give a thought to what's behind the world we deal with every day is the real scandal

I love coffee.

I consume 5-7 cups a day.

I have my first cup before waking up.

The last cup just after falling asleep.

Buenavista's story above reminded me of the parable whether or not in the boiling water life we are a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean.

I would definitely want to be like the coffee bean.

Coffee.

Truly one of God's wondrous creation.

Drink up and have a blessed day.

...only when we learn to acknowledge our blessing, no matter how small they are, can we truly be happy and stop saying.. lord, hear my prayer... for if you come to think of it... God have answered them long before you even asked...we were just too busy staring at another place we don't see it...

COFFEE AND YOUR HEALTH

by Jardine Davies R. Torno, MD

Coffee continues to play an important role in our society today. The Turks first adopted it as a drink, adding spices such as cinnamon and anise to the brew but it was not until 1938 that freeze-dried coffee was invented to become the first drinkable instant coffee. Studies showed that coffee actually contained the highest number of antioxidants per serving. Green coffee beans contain about 1,000 antioxidants, and the brewing process adds 300 more. This is four times more than the antioxidant content of green tea. The brewing process creates its own set of helpful compound which are unique to coffee alone. Although the exact amount of antioxidants in the average cup of coffee still remains to be known. Here are some other reported health benefits associated with coffee:

* A study published in the European Journal of Neurology and the
Canadian Study of Health and Aging, found that those who drank more coffee were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

* A number of studies have indicated that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80 percent less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. This condition develops when the dopamine levels in the brain falls thereby interrupting nerve signals from the brain to the muscles resulting to memory impairment accompanied by tremors and gait disturbances. Caffeine increases the expression of dopamine receptors in the brain.

* Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health concluded that both
men and women coffee drinkers tend to have less risk of developing gallstones.

* According to a new study from University of California which was published in the November issue of Diabetic Care, coffee reduces the risk of diabetes by over 60 percent. Another study at Vanderbilt University believes that a group of compounds present in coffee called Quinines increase the capacity of the liver to use glucose thus improving the blood sugar control in diabetics. It was also found that coffee contains large amount of chlorogenic acid, tocopherols and magnesium which have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.

* Methylpiridinium, a powerful antioxidant found almost exclusively in coffee boosts blood enzymes that are widely believed to protect against colon cancer.

* Coffee also reduces the incidence of heart disease though the exact mechanism is still unknown.

* Another compound in coffee called trigolline which gives coffee its aroma and bitter taste was shown to have anti-bacterial and anti-adhesive properties which helps prevent dental cavities from forming.

* A Brazilian study has determined that drinking a few cups of coffee a day will also increase male fertility. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the caffeine in coffee appears to increase sperm motility thus increasing the odds of pregnancy. Coffee is neither a miracle drink nor a cure for all diseases like the hype we get nowadays in drinking green teas and other health drinks in the market. Neither is it a villainous drink that can cause sickness to our body. In order to benefit from it, one should follow the simple but reliable rule that everything should be taken in moderation. A balanced and sensible diet with regular physical activity is still, by far, the best way to keep fit and healthy. So the next time you drink your favorite cup of coffee, share some of these wonderful facts to your loved ones while enjoying the moment.
