Lesson Learned
« on: October 05, 2009, 06:34:28 PM »

I don’t want to say that the recent havoc brought about by typhoon ‘Ondoy’ is a blessing in disguise for it may add insult to the sufferings of our ‘kababayans’ deeply affected by it. However, there are many lessons that can be learned from this disaster.

First, life’s adversity is a good equalizer. No rich or poor can be spared that is why we have to respect the ‘laws of nature’ and stop abusing our environment.  This can be done by owing responsibility to ourselves in protecting our environment. We can start by disposing our garbage properly and not in the ‘esteros’  causing clogged waterways. After all, we are only stewards of God’s creation.

Second, unfortunate event such as this brings out the ‘soft side’ of us humans. The pouring of compassion for fellowmen is endless. Young and old alike, rich and poor work hand in hand. No doubt, calamities relive the spirit of Filipino ‘Bayanihan’.

Third, it teaches us to rely more on our own capabilities rather than owing everything to the government. Yes, the government has its constitutional responsibility to its people, but facing a life-threatening situation or facing an imminent danger (flood), no one is in the better position to defend or save you but yourself.

Lastly, adversity teaches us to humble ourselves and to submit to the will of the Divine Creator. While some of us may argue that disasters such as this is attributed to neglect of responsibilities on the part of the government, property developers and urban planners alike but lest we forget that it can also be part of the ‘grand design’ made by the ‘architect’ of all architects. Who knows but Him.
