My father, who was wreathing in so much pain after his major operation in Cebu Velez, asked me to hold his hand, and I, sitting by his bedside, held his hand for hours as my eyes were flooded with tears.
Today I read the biography of Bobby Fischer. His last words before he died in Iceland on January 17, 2008 were: "Nothing soothes pain like the touch of a person".
Now I understand why my father, in the most painful hour of his life, had asked me to hold his hand, something that he had never ever uttered to me or to anyone of us, his family.
Thank you, Bobby Fischer, for giving me a lifetime wisdom. Your words will always be inscribed in my heart as long as I live and as long as I hold dearly the living memory of my father.
