How to Live on $1.50 a Day, by Ben Affleck

Fame and frugality are concepts not often associated with one another. Celebrities aren’t only known for their wild spending habits, they’re often applauded for them. But now, one Oscar-winning star is taking the challenge to live on less in order to raise money for and awareness of global poverty.

Ben Affleck has signed on to take the Live Below the Line Challenge, a five-day event where participants agree to spend a maximum of $1.50 a day on food and hydration. They also solicit donations which are then funneled to one of a handful of poverty-focused charities.

This year's challenge will run from April 29-May 3.

Affleck's five days will be dedicated to raising money for his own Eastern Congo Initiative, a U.S.-based nonprofit that provides economic and social development opportunities for the people of that African region.

The Live Below the Line Challenge began as a small project in Australia several years ago, but has since grown into an international effort to help alleviate global poverty.

The $1.50 maximum may seem overly-strict, but it's designed to give entrants an experiential glimpse into what it's like to be limited by a lack of means and opportunity.

That being said, there really is no comparison between living an impoverished life and experiencing a tightly-controlled food budget for five days. But challenges like these work to at least introduce participants to the basic limitations that poverty imposes—the first and foremost being an utter lack of choice.

Similar challenges have taken hold in the U.S., like the SNAP Challenge, where participants agree to live on $4 a day—the average allowance of a food stamp recipient. In the past, a  handful of city mayors including Newark’s Cory Booker have taken on the challenge, along with several of the country’s governors.

Their experiences generally echo one of frustration that the food stamp allowance is too meager to consistently keep them from going hungry.

While that newfound empathy may be positive, there still remains some amount of controversy with the efficacy of food budget challenges, especially those in the U.S. At least according to TIME, despite the awareness these events can raise, they do little to actually change public perceptions about poverty and how large a role the government should play in alleviating it.

The Pew Research Center reports that 71 percent of Americans think that the poor already rely too heavily on assistance, and more than half believe the country should forgo increased assistance if it would increase the deficit. But at the same time, one in five Americans had trouble putting food on their own tables in 2011. In this country, even when the struggle is our own, there's still an over-riding belief that hunger and strife are caused mostly by laziness.

America's conflict with poverty aside, global impoverishment and hunger remains a catastrophic issue. Whether at home or abroad, raising money and inciting compassion are always helpful—they may not be solutions in and of themselves, but they're a step in what can only be a better direction.

let me try to live, in my mind at least, on $1.50 a day in the philippine context.  at the current exchange rate, that would mean around 60 to 65 pesos.  it's enough, but just barely, for a simple 3 square meals for the day and nothing else.

5 pesos - water from the nearest public dispenser; good for only one drink, but being poor, i'll spread it throughout the day

20 pesos - yes, this can still buy me a full meal, though fastfood fare is out of the question.  the cheapest at jollibee costs 65 pesos, the package at 7-eleven is at 47 pesos.  (the sizes of both, according to an american i overheard here, are enough to feed an ant.)

so i'll settle for that rice and fish at the turo-turo.  no meat; the cheapest piece costs 27 pesos, thus it's out of the question.  i'll consume all the rice (i need that for energy), but i'll reserve half of the fish (invariably, an inun-onan) for my next meal, which will now be rice and vegetables.  again i'll reserve half of the vegetables for my third meal, for which i'll buy only a serving of rice for 5 pesos.  i'll buy additional water for 5 pesos.

that leaves me with 10 pesos savings for the day.  the amount can get me somewhere, one-way, because the jeepney fare stands at 8 pesos.

why do i have to buy pre-cooked food and not buy supplies from the market and cook them myself?  well, i've learned long ago that it's cheaper to buy cooked food when one is alone.  consider the additional expenses if one cooks his own food, from power to water expenses.

no question.  $1.50 a day in the philippine context is barely enough to meet one's most basic need, which is food.  nothing is left for shelter, clothing, education, medical needs, tubagbohol internet connection...

no wonder if one isn't too careful one's bag disappears.  one may see it running in the arms of someone else, if one gets lucky.  those street people are hungry, they may as well kill for food. :(

Pamasahe pa lamang from home to office is P25 one way, so P50 ang balikan.

Kung P65 less P50, P15 na lamay mabilin for food (three meals?)! Puwede siguro pero skyflakes ra ahong kan-on. Whew!
