Inspiration In Your Professional Goals
« on: April 11, 2009, 03:02:48 AM »
Despite our professional differences, we all were influenced to the road of choice. Be it Teaching, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing, Accoutancy, Military, Library Science, Research, Medicine etc.

Who influenced your decision in what to study? Expound.

Several years ago,

I was selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, which was held at the prestigious Georgetown University; where a collective of us who chose to pursue medicine/medical research.

There, I was able to make friends, and was able to do rotations with medical professionals in the specialty of Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Family Practice as well as Gastroenterology.

There, I met a quaint individual, who attracted my attention, and during our 2 week duration of the Forum, I befriended Dr. Ralph Updike, M.D, who was a then the Chief Gastroenterologist in the GI Floor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

He showed me the ropes, talked to me about the ins and 'outs of the floor, and we divulged in out of topic conversations, family history, reasons for pursuing medicine, his life story etc etc. A beautiful conundrum of informative exchanges, so to say. lol.

He inspired me with his departing words, 'Always remember why you are hear, and what is the real purpose. Don't you ever let daily trivia and constancy numb you to the calling you were given into Medicine. The poor, the destitute, the dying. They are what counts. Always remember that."

Today, even as I read lectures and discuss with colleagues, I can still hear Dr. Updike's voice and message. It resounds in my head.

He is definitely one of the driving forces that has helped me in my decision.

This is all I have to remember him by:

Taken during the end of my rotation with him.

Thanks Dr. Updike, for helping me.

Spiritually,

I found my LORD in my tenure at Allegheny College.
The evangelistic vision was conferred to me in the many dialogues I had with my college chaplain, Fr. Mark Hoffman. In his tutelage, I joined the choir, participated in Newman Association (the collegiate catholic association). Under his teachings, I renewed my faith and entered full communion with the Holy Roman Catholic Church when I was confirmed in Easter 2007.

Fr. Mark Hoffman was sent to another parish some 60 miles away in my senior year of college, but a bunch of us drove to his parish to attend his opening mass in his new Parish.

My face brightened to see him again, to hear his voice and talk to him. 'Pops' I used to call him. Because he was like a 2nd father to me, especially when I was in college.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Fr. Mark Hoffman.

Thank You, Father Mark, for teaching me the WORD of CHRIST. And opening this heart to HIS Love.

God Be With You, Always,
Lorenzo

By grace, The Father's Word and Spirit shine through, especially in the darkest of times.

Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

I found my inspiration in Matthew 11:29
Jesus is explaining why we should embrace His way of life. As our Lord and Master, He is not harsh, overbearing, and oppressive, but gentle in His government. His laws are also reasonable and easy to obey; neither He nor they enslave. He emphasizes the gentle aspect of meekness toward others. From this, we begin to see why meekness must be a virtue of those who will receive the Kingdom and govern. Because God governs in meekness, His children must also.

This is my good friend, Fr. Mark Hoffman:

Who was the catholic chaplain of my college, he was there in my confirmation.

Imho, one of the best priests I've ever met in my life. Changed my life, my perspective on things.
Many Allegheny College students in my batch came to love him in our weekly mass. for the encouragments, prayers, and fatherly talks.

Thanks for being always there for us, Pops!!!
hehe, we love, you Fr. Mark!
