Filipinos declared as Servants of God
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:47:16 PM »
Servant of God is a title given to individuals by various religions, but in general the phrase is used to describe a person believed to be pious in his or her faith tradition. In the Catholic Church, it designates someone who is being investigated by the Church for possibly being recognized as a saint. In the Eastern Orthodox churches, this term is used to refer to any Eastern Orthodox Christian.

"Servant of God" is the title given to a deceased person of the Catholic Church whose life and works are being investigated in consideration for official recognition by the Pope and the Catholic Church as a saint in Heaven. The title "Servant of God" (Latin: Servus Dei) should not be confused with Servus Servorum Dei (Servant of the Servants of God), one of the titles of the Pope.

Receiving the title Servant of God is the first of the four steps in the canonization process. The next step is being declared Venerable, upon a decree of heroicity or martyrdom by the honored. This is followed by beatification, with the title of Blessed, after the confirmation of miracles resulting from the intercession of the honored. The final step is canonization, where the honored would receive the title of Saint. The process for canonization is under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Mother Dionisia Talangpaz

Mother Dionisia Talangpaz is a Filipino Roman Catholic figure. Along with her sister Cecilia Rosa De Jesús Talangpaz, she founded the "Beaterio de San Sebastian de Calumpang" (now the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters), in 1719. Cecilia Talangpaz

Cecilia Talangpaz is a Kapampangan Filipino Roman Catholic figure. Along with her sister Dionisia Talangpaz, she established the "Beaterio de San Sebastian de Calumpang" (now the "Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters"), in 1719. The Augustinian Recollect Sisters is the second Filipino congregation of women religious founded in the Philippines, after the Religious of the Virgin Mary established by Venerable Ignacia del Espíritu Santo. Talangpaz's beatification process is underway with protocol number: 2303

Cecilia was born on July 16, 1693, in Calumpit, Bulacan to half-Kapampangan parents. Together with her older sister Dionisia, they settled down near the shrine of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Manila. Their devout life attracted the attention of the Recollects who were taking care of the shrine and by July 1725, the sisters received the habit of tertiaries and were gathered in a beaterium.

Bishop Alfredo Maria Obviar

Alfredo Maria Obviar (August 29, 1889 – October 1, 1978) is a Filipino Servant of God who is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. His cause for beatification is currently underway; He was declared Servant of God on 6 March 2001 with saint protocol number: 2398 . He is the founder of Missionary Catechists of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus. He was the Bishop of Lucena City until his death.

Most Rev. Alfredo Maria Aranda Obviar was born on 29 August 1889 in Mataas na Lupa, Lipa City, Batangas to Telesforo Obviar and Florentina Catalina Aranda.

He received his early religious formation and education at the Jesuit College of St. Francis Xavier in Manila where he graduated in 1901. He earned his degree in Bachelor of Arts at the Ateneo de Manila in 1914. He then proceeded to the University of Santo Tomas Pontifical Seminary for Theological Studies.

The Rev. Obviar received the Sacerdotal Ordination on 15 March 1919. His pastoral ministry began that same year at Luta, now Malvar, Batangas, and continued as Pastor of the Cathedral Parish in Lipa City (1927–1944). In both parishes, he established Catechetical Centers at the Poblacion and the barrios. He was also Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Lipa.

After 25 years in the ministry, Fr. Obviar was ordained to the Episcopate on June 29, 1944 and served as the first Auxiliary Bishop of Lipa.

On January 22, 1951, Bishop Obviar was installed as Apostolic Administrator of the new Diocese of Lucena. Motivated by his great work for catechesis, he founded the Missionary Catechists of St. Therese (MCST) on August 12, 1958.

After more than 18 years as Administrator, Bishop Obviar was declared First Residential Bishop of the Diocese of Lucena on July 15, 1969.

Rhoel Gallardo

Father Rhoel Gallardo, C.M.F., (29 November 1965 - 3 May 2000) was martyred Claretian missionary in Basilan, Philippines.

He became a modern-day martyr on 3 May 2000[1] when he was murdered by Islamic rebels on Mindanao. He suffered three gunshot at close range to his head, shoulder and back, and the nails of his index finger and toes had been pulled out two or three days before he was shot.

The cause for his beatification is already in the preliminary stages of the diocesan investigation but has not yet received the decree “nihil obstat” from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
