The Eucharist As Sacrifice

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Love until it hurts.”  This sums up the Eucharist as sacrifice–it is the sacramental expression of Jesus’ love unto the end, where he gave His life for us, on the Cross.  So not only is the Eucharist the Real Presence of Jesus, it is the re-presentation of His sacrifice on Calvary, His perfect act of total self-giving love.  In other words, the same sacrifice that Jesus made 2000 years ago, is made present to us again, so that we may participate in it, and thereby draw fruit from it.  The veil between time and eternity is lifted, as it were, and we peer into the past, into the eternal act of the God-Man who gave Himself up for us, for the forgiveness of our sins.  Jesus loved until it hurt.

This is what is taking place at Mass, if we have eyes to see it.  More than just a meal (though that is part of it), the Eucharist is primarily a sacrifice.  That is why the action of the Eucharist takes place on an altar, and not just a table.  On this altar, Jesus is the High Priest–a priest being one who offers sacrifice to God–and He is at the same time the Victim being offered to God.  He is both Priest and Victim.  His perfect sacrifice on the Cross, where He offered Himself as expiation for the sins of the world, is made present to us again.  During the Eucharistic Prayer, we are at the foot of the Cross, with Mary and John and the other women.  Are we aware of what is happening?

The Second Vatican Council called for “full, conscious, and active participation” in the Eucharistic liturgy.  So we naturally should ask, participation in what, exactly?  We have to know and understand what is really taking place, if we are to participate in it.  Well, what is taking place is the sacrifice of Jesus in His Paschal Mystery, the same sacrifice that took place 2000 years ago.  So participation will essentially consist in uniting ourselves to Jesus in His self-offering to the Father.

How do we do this?  First, we should prepare ourselves ahead of time for Sunday Mass.  Ideally this should involve reading and reflecting on the readings, because the readings, in turn, prepare us for the Eucharist.  The readings make present to us the reality of salvation history, the action of God in redeeming the world.  Then, during the liturgy of the Eucharist, God does what He just told us about in the readings—He redeems the world.  The wonder of it is not just that this is happening before our eyes, but that we are called to be a part of it.  By joining ourselves to Jesus’ sacrifice to the Father, we become participants in redemption—first, our own redemption, and then, that of the whole world.

How, our own redemption?  To fully, consciously, and actively participate in the sacrifice of the Mass, we must, in turn, offer ourselves as a “living sacrifice” to the Father.  This we cannot do on our own—that is why Jesus has gone before us, and he enables us to do it, if we are united with Him.  So what does this mean?  It means that we give back to the Father all that we have received, both the good and the bad, as an offering of love.  It is certainly no less an offering that is made between spouses, when they renew their marital bond through the act of sexual self-giving.  If we can give ourselves—all of ourselves, not just the good parts, but the bad parts, too—to our spouses in love, surely we can give as much, if not more, to God.  We give to the Father, in thanksgiving, all of the joys and blessings we experience.  Can we think of them, one by one, and then offer them back to the Father in gratitude?  We also give to the Father all of our sufferings, the trials we are presently going through, at home or work, whether physical or emotional, psychological or spiritual.  All that we are, and all that we have, we relinquish control over—not just symbolically, but really.  Really let it go—give it to the Father in the same way that Jesus gave everything over to the Father on the Cross.  Jesus will help us do it.  Then, if we do this, will we be participating in the Eucharist.

What is the fruit that is born out of this?  We are enabled to love until it hurts.  Without the Eucharist, it would be impossible to love in this way.  One cannot give what one does not have.  It sounds nice to say that we love a lot—and generally, we think so highly of ourselves, we usually think, “Sure, I could love until it hurts.”  But when it comes down to it, it is very, very difficult.  The flesh rebels.  The spirit rebels.  We simply do not have it in us.  We are empty.  In the concrete circumstances of our lives, when we are called to love beyond our human strength—whether it be with a newborn baby, a child, a friend, spouse, neighbor, co-worker, or anyone whom God has placed in our path and called us to love—we cannot do it without God’s grace.  And we receive that grace in the Eucharist.  We thus offer ourselves to the Father, completely and totally, and we receive back all that we need to love the way that Jesus loves, with His own heart.  Then we will be able to love until it hurts.
