Dying dad keeps ‘promise I made’: Walks daughter down the aisle — on a gurney

Scott Nagy, 56, who is terminally ill with metastatic urethral cancer, pulled up to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in an ambulance to fulfill a vow made to his ‘princess,’ daughter Sarah Nagy, 24.

Bride Sarah Nagy, right, begins to cry as she is escorted by her father, Scott, down the aisle during her wedding ceremony Oct. 12, 2013 at First Lutheran Church.

An Ohio man walked his daughter down the aisle on a hospital gurney.

Scott Nagy, 56, who is terminally ill, arrived at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strongsville Saturday by ambulance to fulfill a promise to his daughter Sarah Nagy, 24, reported The Plain Dealer.

"It was a promise I made in March, to walk her down the aisle," Nagy told the Cleveland newspaper. "She's my princess. This is my definition of walking down the aisle."

Nagy, of Brunswick, was diagnosed with metastatic urethral cancer last November and has been at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center since August.

He traveled down the aisle in the same gurney that transported him from the hospital.

Sarah Nagy and Angelo Salvatore originally planned to marry next year but moved the ceremony forward as Nagy's health deteriorated.

Scott Nagy is wheeled from First Lutheran Church in Strongsville by paramedics Melissa Powell, left, and Andrew Gorman, right.

Sarah Nagy said it was a struggle to move the wedding forward so quickly. "But it is what I wanted since I was a little girl, for my father to escort me down the aisle. My future husband said, 'You will get your wish.' "

"The first night at the hospital, Scott said, 'Just remember, I have to be at my daughter's wedding in October,'" his wife Jean Nagy said.

Nagy attended his daughter's bridal shower and even helped her pick out a wedding dress. There was no way he would miss out on the wedding itself, Jean Nagy said.

Doctors were not sure whether Nagy would actually be able to attend. But with monitor cords slipped under his tuxedo and a tracheal tube attached, he made it down the aisle and gave a thumb's up, according to the Plain Dealer.

Nurse practitioners Jacky Uljanic and Julie Ray volunteered their time to stay with him throughout the day to monitor his condition.

"After Scott told us his goal, he was our inspiration," Uljanic said. "It makes it all worth it."

"There are no guarantees in life," Nagy said. "This is a bonus."
