June 7, 1876: Joséphine of Leuchtenberg, Queen of Sweden and Norway, died at age sixty-nine in Stockholm. The daughter of Eugène de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg, and Princess Augusta of Bavaria, she was a granddaughter of Empress Joséphine of France and named for her grandmother. She married the future King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway and quickly became incredibly popular with both the public and her new family. As Queen, she acted as her husband's advisor, and when a crisis occurred, the King and the Queen withdrew in private to discuss the matter before the king made a decision.
