May 29, 1568: Virginia de' Medici, Duchess of Modena and Reggio, was born in Florence to Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his mistress Camilla Martelli. She was legitimized in 1570 after her father married her mother, and she married Cesare d'Este, Duke of Modena, in 1586. They had ten children together, but the marriage was made unhappy by Cesare's many infidelities, leaving Virginia to suffer bouts of depression. Nevertheless, she coped with her motherly duties and showed herself as a clever and far-sighted ruler when she took the position of Regent during the absence of her husband.
