THE LAST CATHOLIC QUEEN OF ENGLAND
I have a lot of admiration for Mary-Beatrice of Modena, the Italian-born queen whose husband lost the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. I’m writing the chapter on James II for Iain Dale’s forthcoming anthology “Kings and Queens: 1200 years of English history,” and James’s wife is an overlooked figure in our history.
Whatever we think of William and James’s competing theories of power, Queen Mary-Beatrice paid a terrible price for anti-Catholic paranoia, sectarianism, misogyny, and conspiracy theories.
