On this day in history 1813, Thomas Jefferson wrote to his friend, and former rival, John Adams to inform him of their mutual friend's death. This friend, Dr. Benjamin Rush, had brokered a peace between the former friends in 1812, and died only a year later. Jefferson and Adams became rivals leading up to the presidential election of 1800, Jefferson then becoming President. In Jefferson's letter he discusses how few men were still alive that had signed the Declaration of Independence.
These two men were so connected in life that they died on the same day, 4 July 1826, within hours of each other.
