January 15 (12 or 21), 1519: Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa was publicly beheaded in Acla, Panama. His head was not removed on the first stroke of the axe - it actually took three blows. The orders came from his affectionate father-in-law, Pedrarias Dávila, the governor, who had long resented Balboa and his accomplishments. Balboa was best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World.
