Silang Revolt against the Spanish colonizers

The so-called Silang Revolt against the Spanish colonizers broke out on December 14, 1762 in Ilocos Sur, led by Diego Silang and wife Gabriela Silang. It was a protest against the payment of tribute under the tyrannical Spanish rule.

Orphaned at a young age, Diego Silang lived among the friars in the convent of Vigan, assisting and serving the parish priest.

During his frequent trips through the countryside as messenger-courier, he witnessed the Spanish abuses and tyranny.

Silang joined the underground movement, but the Spaniards arrested him and flogged him in public.

The December 14, 1762 revolt successfully forced out of office the Vigan governor and bishop, and Silang declared the independence of Ilocandia, naming the state "Free Ilocos" and proclaimed Vigan as the capital of the newly-independent state.

He was made head of Vigan and other nearby towns and drastically changed certain laws.

However, Silang was assassinated by some of his friends who were paid by the Spanish authorities.

His brave wife, Gabriela, continued her husband's struggle, earning the title "Joan of Arc of the Ilocanos" because of her many victories in battle.

The revolt eventually ended with the defeat of the Ilocanos, and Gabriela Silang was executed by the Spanish authorities in Vigan on September 10, 1763.

Also on this same date in 1897, the Truce of Biak-na- Bato was signed by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Spanish Governor-General Fernando Primo de Rivera to provisionally stop the armed conflict between the Filipinos and Spaniards.

The truce, however, failed due to suspicions on both sides, and fighting resumed in May 1898.
