June 3, 1877: Sophie of Württemberg, Queen of the Netherlands, died at Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, aged fifty-eight. Born at Ludwigsburg Palace near Stuttgart to King William I and Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna of Russia, she married her first cousin, the future King Willem III of the Netherlands, in 1839, and it was pretty much a disaster from the beginning. Intellectual and inclined to more cerebral activities, she was severely disliked by her mother-in-law (who was also her aunt), and she had no problem making public declarations that her husband was unfit to be King. On the plus side, she protected and stimulated the arts and supported several charities including animal protection and construction of public parks.
