May 29, 1883: Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, Princess Albert of Prussia, died at the Reinharthausen Palace in Erbach, aged seventy-three. The youngest child of King Willem I of the Netherlands and Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia, she married her cousin Prince Albert of Prussia in 1830 and had five children with him. In 1845 she left her unfaithful husband and began to live with her lover and former coachman Johannes van Rossum, giving birth to their only child seven months after her divorce was finalized. An unusually progressive woman and cultural visionary, she made her residence, the Schloss Reinhartshausen, a cultural center of the Rhine, reconstructing part of the Schloss as a museum to house her collection of six hundred paintings. The museum is known today as the Festsäle.
