June 2, 1805: Maria Theresa of Savoy, Comtesse d'Artois, died at age forty-nine in Graz, Austria. The daughter of King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia and Infanta Maria Antonia Ferdinanda of Spain, she married Charles Philippe, Comte d'Artois, the youngest grandson of the reigning King Louis XV of France, in 1771. Considered good-hearted but rather stupid, she nevertheless did her duty and produced heirs for her husband. She followed him into exile after the storming of the Bastille in 1789, and her husband left her in Savoy in 1791, never seeing her again. Her husband eventually became King Charles X of France, but as she died before he ascended the throne, she was never Queen.
