May 28, 1767: Maria Josepha of Bavaria, Holy Roman Empress, died of smallpox at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, aged twenty-eight. The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VII and Maria Amalia of Austria, she married her second cousin, the future Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II. Amiable and kind, she was rather well-liked by everyone but her husband who, of course, she adored. This sad state of affairs continued for the two years they were married, and when she fell ill with smallpox, her husband (being terrified of the disease) refused to visit her. He seemed to harbor some regret for his behavior toward her, but apparently not enough to actually attend her funeral.
