President Corazon C. Aquino, in an extraordinary scene for a nation's leader, summoned reporters to her private residence Monday to show them that she cannot hide under her bed.
"This is my bed. It is impossible to hide under it," Aquino angrily told the startled reporters who watched her turn up the covers of her bed to reveal a solid platformlike wood base.
Aquino, who has been the focus of increasing criticism as being weak and indecisive in the face of military and political threats, was reacting to a popular Manila columnist's comment that during August's abortive military coup she had taken shelter under her bed.
