Italian astronomer was "BURNED ALIVE" at the stake in Rome 424 years ago, in 1600, for proposing that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets, raising the possibility of Alien life, and insisting that the universe is infinite and has no center.
Giordano Bruno is known for his cosmological theories, which conceptually extended to include the then-novel Copernican model. He practiced Hermeticism and gave a mystical stance to exploring the universe.
He proposed that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets (exoplanets), and he raised the possibility that these planets might foster life of their own, a cosmological position known as cosmic pluralism. He also insisted that the universe is infinite and could have no center.
Bruno supported the idea that the Earth and planets orbit the sun, which went against the beliefs of his time. For speaking out and refusing to stay silent, he was persecuted and eventually killed. His life reminds us that people who challenge conventional ideas often face criticism and punishment, even today, but their ideas help society and knowledge move forward.
Bruno spent eight years in prison under the Roman Inquisition, enduring torture. He was accused of heresy for stating that stars are suns like our own (true), that they have planets around them (true), and that these planets might have intelligent life (modern science is exploring this idea). He also said the Earth is a planet (true) and that the cross symbol was used by ancient Egyptians as the ankh, symbolizing life (true).
When ordered to take back his ideas or be burned alive, Bruno refused. He told his accusers he had only spoken the truth. After being sentenced, he boldly said: "Your fear in passing judgment on me is greater than mine in receiving it."
On February 17, 1600, Bruno was taken to the Campo de Fiori in Rome. Dressed in a white shirt, he was tied to a wooden pole surrounded by wood and sticks. As the fire was lit, he reportedly said, “I die a willing martyr, and my soul will rise with the smoke to paradise.” An eyewitness claimed that when a crucifix was shown to him, Bruno turned his head away. Suffering in the flames, he still found the strength to reject the symbol forced upon him.
“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - John 3:16-18
