June 4, 1738: George III, King of the United Kingdom, was born at Norfolk House to Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. Known primarily as the king who lost the Colonies (USA) or as Mad King George, he was in fact quite a capable ruler, one born in Britain, who spoke English as his first language, and who never visited his German kingdom of Hanover.
