On June 21, 1569, Spanish navigator Miguel Lopez de Legazpi received an order from King Philip II of Spain appointing him as the
first governor-general of the Philippines.
In theory, the Filipinos ceased to be free allies and became subjects of Spain.
Of the successive expeditions by Spain after Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage in 1521, marking the historic circumnavigation of the globe and proving that the world is round, the only successful voyage to the Philippines was that of Legazpi in 1564.
With the help of Agustinian and Franciscan friars, Legazpi was able to organize his own government almost without fighting. He formed the first Spanish settlements in Cebu in 1565. His conquest was non-violent, and his short rule was beneficial.
He established Manila in June 1571 as the capital of the Philippines and the Spanish East Indies and permanent seat of the Spanish colonial government in the western Pacific Ocean.
Legazpi governed the colony for a year before dying of heart failure in Manila on August 20, 1572.
He died poor and bankrupt, leaving only a few pesos behind, having spent most of his personal fortune during the conquest. He was laid to rest at the San Agustin Church in Intramuros. (PNA)
