June 5, 1771: Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover, was born at Buckingham House to King George III and Queen Charlotte. Their fifth son, he was sent to Hanover in his adolescence for his education and military training. When his older brother King William IV died in 1837, Ernest acceded to the Hanoverian throne as Queen Victoria was barred from taking it. Becoming Hanover's first ruler to reside in the state since George I, he had a generally successful fourteen-year reign.
