June 3, 1880: Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia died at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, aged fifty-five. Born Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine in Darmstadt to Grand Duke Ludwig II and Princess Wilhelmine of Baden, she married the future Tsar Alexander II in 1840, converting to Eastern Orthodoxy and taking the name Maria Alexandrovna. She learned the Russian language quickly and loved her adopted country, but she did not enjoy court life or the duties of representation as she was shy and of a withdrawn nature, thus making her unpopular. She took interest in charity activities and was particularly active in the field of female education, establishing Russia's first all female schools.
