May 30, 1839: Ellen Franz, Baroness von Heldburg, was born in Naumburg. A German pianist and actress, she married Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen in 1873. Because of her bourgeois origin, the Duke ennobled her shortly before their marriage, but she never held the title of Duchess as the marriage was morgantic. Together with the director Ludwig Chronegk, they established the "Meiningen Principles", a profound reform in theatrical practice, and created what would become the world-famous Meiningen Ensemble.
