June 7, 1840: Carlota, Empress of Mexico, was born Princess Charlotte of Belgium to King Leopold I and Louise-Marie d'Orléans. Their only daughter, she married her second cousin Archduke Maximilian of Austria who became Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. When the situation in Mexico went from bad to worse, she returned to Europe, seeking assistance for her husband in Paris, Vienna, and finally in Rome from Pope Pius IX, all in a desperate attempt to save her husband's throne. Her efforts failed; she manifested symptoms of paranoia, suffered a profound cognitive and emotional collapse, and never returned to Mexico.
