May 30, 1730: Arabella Churchill, mistress of King James II/VII (when Duke of York), died in London. The daughter of Sir Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Drake, she was the sister of the first Duke of Marlborough. Unlike his brother, James seemed to prefer plainer women with lively intelligence and quick wit, and their relationship lasted through ten years and four children. After their parting in 1678 she married Charles Godfrey and had three more children with him.
