February 16, 1857: American explorer Elisha Kent Kane died at age thirty-seven in Havana, Cuba. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1842, becoming an assistant surgeon in the Navy the next year. He served in the China Commercial Treaty mission under Caleb Cushing, in the Africa Squadron, and in the United States Marine Corps during the Mexican-American War. He was appointed senior medical officer of the Grinnell Arctic expedition which searched unsuccessfully for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, and he then organized and headed the Second Grinnell expedition. He received medals from Congress, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Société de géographie.
