Why Antibiotics Are Bad For You
« on: January 04, 2012, 02:17:23 AM »
by Frances Sheridan Goulart

Reaching for an apple, some oatmeal, or an herb before you have to start taking an antibiotic is smart. Antibiotics are now the leading cause of adverse drug reactions in the United States and the cause of oft en deadly strains of resistant bacteria. In addition, antibiotics are commonly overprescribed. Even though, for example, most sore throats are viral and not bacterial in nature (therefore, resistant to antibiotics), 73 percent of viral sore throats are oft en treated with an antibiotic prescription, according to a yearlong study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

While super pills may help with super infections caused by bacteria, drugs such as penicillin and sulfur drugs can lower your resistance even as they help you fi ght back. In the process of killing those bad bugs, antibiotics deplete a wide spectrum of nutrients that are the foundation for immunity, including vitamin C, iron, zinc, and most of the B vitamins, plus bone-building vitamin K, calcium, and magnesium. In addition, antibiotics wipe out your good bacteria, so they are best used only when truly necessary—and even bett er, avoid them altogether with super immunity nutrition.

Here in the U.S. a test will be done to determine if the causative agent is a virus or bacteria
and if it's bacteria a sensitivity test will determine the drug  to be used.
In case of  viral infection then the medication will be only  for the symptoms and not any antibiotic.
At present there is no drug in the market without any side effect, so the best defense is to keep
the immune system at it's best.

Although I understand where you are coming from, this could potentially be a dangerous article because there are individuals here that might take this as medical advice.

The problem is not the antibiotics. The problem is the shotty health care providers. When you are in a more less informed environment , reading an article like this might deter you from taking antibiotics that could potentially save your life or might prevent you from taking a full dose of antibiotics that could consequentially cause patients that are suffering from a bacterial infection to develop a resistance to the very bacteria that could have saved their life.

This is the problem that I have with the internet, anyone can write anything without any responsibility. As a professional, please do the responsible thing and be a little more extensive in your research before you write anything that could mean the difference between life or death. You don't want to be Jenny Macarthy.
