White rice linked to higher diabetes risk—study

WASHINGTON DC, United States—A US-based study on Monday linked eating white rice to higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and backed long-held claims that brown rice is healthier than the white variety.

People who ate at least five servings of white rice per week had a 17 percent greater risk of developing diabetes than those who consumed less than one serving per month, Harvard School of Public Health scientists found.

i'm confused now.  i also came across an article claiming that brown rice has more glucose content than white rice (the long-grained kind, except jasmin), red rice is the best, and rice in general is better than wheat and potato.  it's beginning to sound like the pros and cons of vitsin (msg) that used to flip-flop for a decade.

LoL. If you look at the back of the product (Nutrition facts) you're very right, brown rice has more sugar content than the white counterpart... but for some reason most claims (or so-called experts) claim otherwise. But being diabetic and having to monitor such food-type, since 1998, yes, I tend to agree with their claim.  ;)

This is very true, Bem. Good article.

High in glucose content man gud ning white rice. It correlates to the US statistics for 2007 that Asian-Americans have high percentage of diabetes. It makes one think of correlation due to the importance of white rice in Asian (east/southeast and some south) communities.

bem, binlod amo kasagaran kaunon dire.  panagsa ra na mag white rice mi kay di gusto akong bana kay bleached rice na lagi daw.  sabagay mas ganahan man pod ko brown rice.

According to most glycemic indices, potatoes are considered to have higher glucose content than rice.
