The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public and fitness enthusiasts on Monday against the wearing of crystal bangles and beads, magnetic bracelets and pendants because they are not scientifically proven to be cure-alls.
In an advisory issued by DOH, Health Secretary Enrique Ona enjoined the people to be wary of devices and accessories claiming to be cure-alls and promoters of health.
The advisory said: “Avoid the use of devices or technologies that can allegedly promote better health, diagnose or cure human diseases
without credible scientific basis.â€
Late last year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released its own bulletin on the claim of the company Power Balance that its bracelets and pendants “work positively with the body’s natural energy field†and improve balance, strength and flexibility.
The hugely popular silicone bracelets are worn by such American basketball superstars as Shaquille O’Neal, Lamar Odom and Kobe Bryant.
The DOH said it had learned that similar performance accessories and products, including crystals and magnets, were being sold in the Philippine market “with unsubstantiated claims of improving health or preventing illnesses.â€
These products are in the form of wristbands, bracelets, pendants, belts, watches, shoe soles, flasks and anklets, DOH said. (PNA)
