Health dept to start 'shaming' LGUs with highest number of firecracker-related injuries on Dec. 28
MANILA, Dec. 27 (PNA) -- A health department spokesman said they are looking forward to starting their “shame campaign†on Wednesday as a way of calling the attention of local government units to step up their individual campaigns against the use of firecrackers.
"Tomorrow, our health secretary (Dr. Paulyn Ubial) will come up with a list wherein we will enumerate the cities with top injuries," Dr. Eric Tayag said Tuesday.
Tayag said that along with the list, the health chief will give each of the five LGUs with the most number of firecracker-related injuries a “bansag†or epithet.
"For sure, many will react," he said, adding that it is up to the LGUs to take this constructively.
The goal of the shame campaign, Tayag explained, is to make the LGUs realize the important role they play in preventing firecracker-related injuries during this holiday season.
He said the epithet is a punishment by itself.
"Let's see if this will work," he said, noting that the department had to resort to the shame campaign since the signing of the executive order on the use of firecrackers has been postponed till September next year in consideration of those whose livelihood depends on the manufacture of firecrackers.
