Several issues dealing with the quality of commercial bottled water were raised in a technical forum sponsored by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (KKP) during the Philippine Chemistry Congress last April 13, 2012 at EDSA-Shangrila Hotel, Metro Manila.
(1) Accreditation of laboratories by Department of Health (DOH) – proper term is “recognitionâ€
*required laboratory space is too small
*qualifications of persons certifying reports of analysis and evaluating laboratories are in question
*issues on proficiency test and agencies involved in “DOH lab accreditationâ€
(2) Refilling stations *The question on the proper monitoring of refilling stations by the DOH
*Sampling is done by refilling station owner, thus there is no assurance of sample integrity
*Labeling/mislabeling of bottled water containers; examples are oxygenated, ionized, iodine-fortified, etc.
*Refilling stations bottle their water; this is non-compliance of DOH rules
*Fly-by-night “Garage Negosyoâ€
*Use of recycled containers and tap water
*Contamination with algae especially when exposed to sunlight, giving malodor and algal “lumot†taste
*The use of “spring water†which could have microbiological contamination, fertilizer and pesticide contamination
(3) Environmental issues*Use of plastic PET bottles made from oil and natural gas which are non-renewable and may leach chemicals into the water
*Seventy five per cent of water bottles are thrown in the trash rather than recycled
