Those who have heart problems..
« on: August 24, 2008, 04:32:14 AM »
For those who have cardiopulmonary problems; hypertension, high blood pressure, etc.

Make sure to always carry a bottle of nitroglycerin in your personal bag, in your bed side table or in your car just in case.

The reason for this is just in case you have chest pains, in case of MI, take 2 nitro pills and place it under your tongue. It will dilate your arteries to allow blood to flow; and can save your life from a heart attack.

Also make sure to take your beta blockers, your blood thinners (aspirin etc) to stay safe.

It also helps to raise your legs when you're sleeping. Place 1 or 2 pillows under your foot so that your legs are elevated; this forces more blood to go to the body and away from the legs.

Practice safe and healthy life tips. Stay safe and stay healthy!

I think he does take his medication religiously.  But the diet was another story.  My aunt and Inday Alyssa are making sure that Uncle Ray gets the right food.  He started feeling the tingling sensation in his elbow Saturday afternoon, few hours after he learned that his favorite sister in New Mexico had a heart attack.  It wasn't really that bad heart attack but it he didn't know at that time and it worried him so much.  Anyway, he didn't tell about his situation until early morning the next day when he felt that tingling sensation again and a headache.  He took aspirin but it didn't relieve his uncomfort so he asked my aunt to call his doctor.  The doctor, after talking to my uncle, directed for them to go to the emergency right away.  He was kept in the hospital overnight.

Lorenzo, I've seen somebody putting ice under the tongue as first aid for heart attack or stroke. Is this OK.

I've never heard this during our First Aid class. Beware to put anything cold to a person who has had a stroke or heat stroke because they can go into shock.

First aid when a person has a heart attack, if there is no Nitro or aspirin, is to begin doing CPR and Artificial Respiration.

---

For stroke victims, the immediate first aid for them is to make sure that they are breathing; if they are then make sure to elevate their shoulders and head--this will relieve blood pressure to the brain.

Do not give anything to eat or drink to them; their throat may be paralyzed and restricting their ability to swallow.

Thanks a lot, Dong! He had a little bleeding in his brain but by the time he was released from the hospital and after the second CT scan, the trace of blood was almost gone and the doctor said it was going to heal on its own.

I know Lipitor since 2006 when my late mother in law had CKD - Chronic Kidney Disease and at that time her disease was on ESRD - End Stage Renal Dysfunction, that means doctors could not save her kidneys and the only relief is a dialysis or a transplant. Kidney disease is very tricky because you will never know the symptoms as long as your kindneys are still functioning 20% even if you have the disease. You will only experience symptoms once your kidneys are 5% functioning, when it is already too late to save it.

Sadly, I had no money that time for the expensive process. So, what I did was do research. I found an article that Lipitor which is a cholesterol cutting drug can boost kidney function from 5% up to 20%. The dosage I forgot, but it should be at the highest, maybe 500 mg.

Main causes of CKD is diabetes (due to hardening of arteries), high blood pressure and cholesterol. The best preventive measure is to avoid the cause and to have yearly or bi-yearly creatinine test, which is not a costly procedure and could save your life. Africans, Pacific people including Filipinos are prone to this disease.

In time all things will heal. Tito Ray will need to maintain his prescription intake, as well as change dietary intake as well; reduce cholesterol, and he should take an aspirin a day.

Males between the ages of 45 and over are high risk for Heart Attacks and Strokes.

My own father takes his medications religiously as well as maintains a healthy lifestyle. Every day jud ni siya he takes aspirin.

Prevention is always the best, 'te.

God Bless Tito Ray that he gets better.

All the best,

Aspirin was just accidentally discovered to be anti blood thickening. It was even banned in the US in the 90's. Remember the Tylenol case which went up to the senate.

Abi gud ninyo ning mga ing ani accumulation man ni sukad pa sa imong pagkagamay, it all has something to do with how you managed your diet and your lifestyle. Ang bata nga nag sigi na kaon ug junk foods have already a tendency to suffer in their later life, ngano? ang cholesterol dont accumulate just now, nag sugod na na sa una, kani atong mga kabataan karon nga wa nay panahon mag dula kay sigi nalang nag computer ug text, are the ones will suffer not even later.

My point is, start dieting kids now. Kamo mga batan-on pa, eat healthy foods and do more excercise as much as you could. There are younger people who are sick now more  than ever.

Having too much food  during your meal is no longer a LUXURY this time....

So guys, go out and excercise and eat healthy, okay?

Thanks jud, Dong!  I will relay this to them.  Yes, the nutritionist had lots of bawal na for Uncle Ray.  Low fat, low sodium, low cholesterol and all the lows!  I hope he can keep up with this new healthy diet because I know Uncle Ray is a lover of good and sinful food like a big o chunk of steak, pastries and ala-IHOP kind of breakfast!

Nakabasa pod ko nga infants from birth up to six months should not be fed with any carbohydrates such as rice or wheat as they will develop gluten intolerance that cause type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes in later childhood stage.

Infants up to six months should be fed only with mothers milk or non-gluten formula. The problem in the Philippines is that they start feeding infants with boiled rice at 3 months old which is dangerous.

Childhood diabetes will complicate to heart and artery disease in adult life.

So ayaw gyud na pakan-a ug nilugaw nang inyong mga anak before six months old. Paliti gyud ug formula bahala ug mahal.

All i can advice to those who have or may have not or those who may have but didnt know they have heart problems...

You cant just go to any high elevated places. And others may have not known, mag lain gani inyong pamati when you fo to high elevation, kanaug dayun or take deep breaths, try to cough as hard as you can, a hard cough nga murag naa kay plema nga gusto ipagawas. Kay when you cough hard mura ra na ug nag CPR ka sa imong kaugalingon...To some early in the morning, if you feel like peeing from a deep sleep, dont stand up right away, try to sit a while kay daghan kaajo heart attack early in the morning...

Bella,

Preventing heart attack and high blood pressure is more on physical and psychological discipline.

Physical in the sense that all knowledge and information are useless if you don't act now. The hardest part is Psychological discipline of controlling your urges. I learned something from one of my indian collegue who practised yoga. He said that there are three parts of a person, which is body, brain and you. Body is your vehicle, brain is your computer and you the controller.

Tus, you have to change your lifestyle! i mean something has to change, kay di jud na mo taas imong BP for no reason at all! Im glad na ubos na na imong preassure kay luoy baja ang heart ug ma over work. Mao raba tawon nay pina ka overwork sa tanan part sa body, unya ato pa jud i-ignore.

Stay calm and focus with your health all the time okay? You are still lucky you know whats going on, kay aware na ka what to do.

Shall we start excercising now?

She is correct.

This is called HAS (high altitude sickness) and is caused when anyone goes to high altitudes, as altitude increases there is less oxygen and this translates, biochemically speaking, in less oxygen per breath; as a result there is a matistasis of decreaed oxygen in the blood.

This translates in the body's (the heart) need to pump more blood. For those who are already suffering from chronic cardiopulmonary problems, this is a serious condition as it can place excessive stress on the cardiothoracic system.

Myocardial infarction can occur; as it is documented in many medical journals. That is why it is recommended by physicians for patients that are suffering abroad (taking airplane) to take and bring their medication; beta blockers, blood thinners, dilators.

Cheers,

One another important message that I have to tell anyone here who are already in their upper 40s and are taking medication already.

It is important to lay off 'SALT'.

Excessive intake of Salt (Sodium Chloride) is a leading cause of cardiac-related problems.

Let me explain to you the biochemical processes of Salt that is negates the system;

Water moves across membranes into an area of higher salt concentration. So with a higher salt concentration, you have a higher water content, which increases the volume of blood, which in turn increases the pressure. Hence any  increase of Salt intake will lead to a massive increase in Blood Pressure (HBP)

REMEMBER,

Sodium is the one kept out of cells and potassium is the one inside cells.

Our cells live in an ocean of salt water (serum) which is very high in sodium and very low in potassium. This salt water passes through each cell at the rate of nearly 100 times the volume of the cell each second. Yet the cells themselves contain a sodium concentration of only 7% of the serum and a potassium concentration 32 times greater than the serum.

This is why we have the Sodium-Potassium Pump in the cell. To maintain homeostasis.

Any increase of NA (sodium) will devastate that balance.

----

For those who love to eat Filipino food; you can help yourself by eating Filipino food still, but just limit the amount of salt you put in your food. You can do this by reducing amount of toyo; stop eating too much buwad, stop eating too much humba; stop eating too much salted adobo.

Focus more on fiber-based food. Eat celery, cabbage, batchoy etc.

:)

Yours,
Lorenzo

Thanks jud, Dong!  I will relay this to them.  Yes, the nutritionist had lots of bawal na for Uncle Ray.  Low fat, low sodium, low cholesterol and all the lows!  I hope he can keep up with this new healthy diet because I know Uncle Ray is a lover of good and sinful food like a big o chunk of steak, pastries and ala-IHOP kind of breakfast!

'te Ging,

Okey ra man pood if he eats steak pero he needs to reduce his pieces pood. Instead of having just a 12 oz or 15 oz steak with fries and butter roll; Tito Ray can have a 8 oz steak (grilled to his loving, of course, lol) and instead of fries and butter roll; he can have a bowl of salad. Instead of coke, or pepsi, he can have tea or water with lemon.

It's all about will power, jud. Okey ra man if he eats what he wants, pero he needs to seriously reduce his portions and balance it out with healthy foods: per se more on fiber. More into cabage, pichay and bachoy; because these things are like brooms tht sweep out the particulates in our stomach, in our jejunum and in our duodenum (small intestines) and kick it out of the body.

Tell him jud, Ate Ging, to take an aspirin a day. He needs to maintain his blood thinners jud ani. I talked to my uncle about this, who is a practicing Internal Medical Doctor. He says blood thinner, healthy diety, and daily exercise jud.

To All Glory and Praise goes to God.
Who strengthens us all
Who gives us our daily bread
And who calls us home according to his own plans.

Thank you so much for all these tips, Dong.  I talked to Tia Edna about this who is monitoring Uncle Ray's diet.

All the best to you and your entire family, Ate Ging!
