The Oriental Food Secret of Slimness and Healthy Long Life - The Chinese diet and the Okinawa case

The western diets are very tricky: besides the health problems they produce (like heart, liver or kidney issues, or gout), they have also the yo-yo effect: subjects regain quickly the lost weight when they stop the diet, and even gain more. Less stress, more physical exercise and a healthy life style could help.

The Chinese tradition says that to be healthy and slim is very easy. It's enough for example to drink a lot of warm water and eat cooked meals. The weight loss should be of no more than one kg (2.2 pounds) per week.

As sports, a daily walk of 30 minutes is recommended, but also light jogging and swimming.

There must be three meals daily. Breakfast must consist only in a herbal infusion and fruit. The main meal is the lunch. The dinner, rapid and light, must not contain dairy products and animal proteins. Smothered vegetables and rice should be the main components of the menu.

As for the meant, only fish and chicken are allowed, without cattle, lamb or pork. And one very important detail: no fatty foods.

The beverages must never be cold; instead, just warmed water, alone or with honey, lemon, or herbal infusion (ginger, mint or cinnamon). The
best is to drink 2-3 liters.

In the Oriental diet, fruit is recommended, as vitamin C is useful for eliminating fat. 1-2 lemons, one orange or a pomelo would do good. All acid fruits, with a little watery content, like strawberries, help lose weight. Avoid fruits like avocado (which is fatty), mango or banana (both rich in sugars). Never eat salads for dinner, as the leaves are more difficult to digest.

Eat cereals maximum twice per week. Wheat is not proper for slimming, and the same can be said about pastas, biscuits, and crackers made of integral flour. Slices of rye bread are better. Never mix muesli with sweet fruits, milk or yogurt. The best is to eat quark.

Yogurt is not recommended for dinner, as it is difficult to digest and does not help lose weight. It is recommended just the low fat yogurt and with hot spices, which favor the digestion. The best spices are: cumin, coriander, and fennel.

Sausages, cheese and eggs should be avoided. Just occasionally, dry or wet goat cheese can be consumed as snack during the midday, but never during the night.

Experts are also puzzled by the case of the Okinawa island (in southern Japan) people. If Japanese people live longer than any other nation, the Okinawa inhabitants reach ages that take by surprise even the other Japanese: an average of 86 for women and 78 for men.

There are 457 persons on Okinawa aged 100 or over, an average of 35 for each 100,000 inhabitants. It is the highest in the world. But what's more important, these people are active and healthy at very advanced ages.

The statistics reveal a significantly lower risk of heart attack and stroke, cancer, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s… And some Okinawans that have reached their 90’s claim that they still have an active sex life (without Viagra!).

After decades of research, doctors and anthropologists reached the conclusion that there are two main factors behind the longevity on this island: alimentation and a healthy lifestyle that experts believe that can be imitated.

The aliments eaten by the Okinawans can be found everywhere, even if there may be also something about the soil of the island. The traditional diet of Okinawa consists in portions made of a bowl of cooked food and a fruit. Okinawans eat daily seven portions of vegetables and fruits, seven of cereals and two of soy products. They take various portions of fish weekly and very sporadically meat and dairy products. Overall, their diet is low in calories and contains a lot of vegetables.
