It's important to keep safety in mind, especially since most people will have pots on all burners and juggling the preparation of several dishes.

Keep anything that can catch on fire away from the stovetop, including potholders, wooden utensils, wrappers and trash, the American Red Cross of West Michigan recommends.

Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food, according to the Red Cross.

Make sure food is fully cooked, and that it is properly cleaned beforehand.

To prevent accidents, turn handles on the pot inward, according to the Red Cross.

If you are frying a turkey, make sure you read all the instructions and keep children and pets away from the fryer, according to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Do not overfill the fryer with oil and use the kind recommended by the manufacturer.
