The SMA 2020-2021 President was installed Saturday afternoon at the Annual Assembly.

The Southern Medical Association (SMA) is proud to announce the installation of Christopher R. Morris, MD, as President for 2020-2021. Dr. Morris was installed Saturday afternoon at the Annual Assembly. Established in 1906, SMA is a multidisciplinary, interprofessional medical association committed to providing physicians with education and information in order to provide quality patient care and lead the discussion on healthcare reform.
Dr. Morris is the first Rheumatologist to serve as President. He is board certified in Rheumatology with more than 20 years experience. He received his undergraduate degree at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and received his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He completed his Internship and Residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, and Rheumatology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Before entering private practice, he was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he was involved in numerous research projects.
Dr. Morris has been a member of SMA since he was a resident. He has served in many leadership roles, and as a member of the Board for the last several years. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Morris said, “SMA is my family of medicine. The place where I started, and have remained connected throughout my career. I ask you to join me this year, in helping make our family bigger and stronger.”
Dr. Morris has a very distinguished career serving in leadership. He has served in many roles during his member service with SMA including representing his state as Councilor and serving on several Education Design Groups. He has served on six committees for the American College of Rheumatology, currently serving on the Insurance subcommittee, which advocates for patients with rheumatologic diseases.
Dr. Morris is married to Jane Alison Jackson Morris, and has two children Christopher Richard Jr. and Amanda Kathleen. His hobbies include being a life master in bridge, and Order of Merlin in the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
