2021 NM: First 1000 Days will solve Malnutrition
Cebu City – Since time in memorial malnutrition has always been combated with conventional band-aid activities mostly targeting children who are already malnourished and often these interventions come too late which is why the National Nutrition Council gives emphasis on prevention and providing interventions in the first 1000 days to cut the problem at its root.
With the persistent malnutrition issue in the country, the National Nutrition Council utilizes the annual Nutrition Month campaign to emphasize good health and nutrition in the first 1000 days of life anchoring on the theme “Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, First 1000 Days tutukan! The theme calls for continued efforts to address malnutrition in the country which is expected to worsen because of the pandemic and limited resources for nutrition. The theme also asks all sectors to focus efforts on the First 1000 Days of life as the strategic intervention to prevent stunting.
The annual campaign aims to increase understanding of the First1000 Days of Life strategy and the PPAN as overall framework (Educate), facilitate collaboration among various stakeholders for scaled up interventions to fight malnutrition (Encourage), and generate interactions from stakeholders about nutrition (Engage).
In Central Visayas alone, malnutrition prevalence may have decreased but the magnitude of those that are affected is still relatively high, particularly, those who are stunted or chronically malnourished at about 10.1% or 60,819 children 0-59 months from all over the region in 2020. An NNC message recall survey in 2021 also shows very limited awareness of the first 1000 days strategy at only 12% in Central Visayas.
The theme is also an answer to the limited awareness of the first 1000 days strategy which includes health and nutrition interventions for pregnant women, lactating women, and children 0-23 months. It serves as a venue to encourage scaling up interventions within this golden window of opportunity by implementing RA 11148 or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act.
The National Nutrition Council Region VII has lined up a variety of activities to promote the first 1000 days this July starting off with an online launching activity on the first of July aiming to reach out to nutrition service providers, partners and stakeholders and discuss the importance of providing health and nutrition services for pregnant women and their babies as well as showcase commitment or local chief executives in the implementation of RA 11148.
The half day activity scheduled in the afternoon will start off with the 2021 Nutrition Month Prayer and features talks and inspirational messages by members of the Regional Nutrition Committee. It will also serve as venue for the launching of the nutrition networks’ nutrition month special project including the DocuNanay (for pregnant women) by the Nutrition Program Coordinators’ Association of Region 7 Inc., Nutri Jingle Contest (featuring breastfeeding) by the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Association 7 Inc.’s, and CompleTips vlogs (for complementary feeding) by the Central Visayas Association of Nutrition Action Officers Inc. These efforts by the nutrition networks hope to carry the message that May Pag-asa sa ABaKaDa – Alagaan ang buntis, Breastfeeding kay baby, Komplementary feeding na sapat, Dapat lahar suportado and Phil. Plan of Action for Nutrition.
Other highlights of the launching event will be the announcement of the “First 1000 Days Tiktok Challenge” Social Media campaign and the launching of the Nanay Nutrition School on Air (NSAO) program. The activity will be capped off with the recitation of the 2021 Nutrition Month Pledge.
The entire 47th NM launching will be broadcasted live via NNC 7’s official Facebook Page.//
